Modules

Glass breakage means the module's front glass is cracked, either locally or across the whole module. It is a common, high-severity module failure that affects both safety and output. Common causes include hail or other impacts, wrong clamping or overtightened screws, transport and handling, lamination defects, and thermal stress from hotspots or burn marks. Tempered glass shatters into small pieces and annealed glass breaks into large pieces. The cells underneath are often cracked and can form hotspots. Broken glass lets moisture in, so insulation faults and ground faults can appear, often intermittently on rainy days. Interconnections then corrode over time. Visual inspection is the quickest way to find it. Use infrared thermography for hotspots, electroluminescence for cracked cells, and insulation testing for safety risk. Replace modules with broken glass, especially when safety or insulation is at risk. Resealing only helps temporarily for minor cracks. Also look into the root cause, such as clamp stress or hail.

Claims

affects

c1 drafted · lead Module front glass

c2 drafted · lead Solar cell

Shattering of tempered glass usually breaks the cells as well.

c3 drafted · lead Cell interconnect ribbon

Moisture entering through broken glass speeds up corrosion of cell interconnections.

caused_by

c4 verified · fact Manufacturing defect

Incorrect lamination raises mechanical stress on module materials.

verified by: joshuahamsaverified on: 2026-10-16

c5 verified · fact Installation error

Improper clamping of frameless modules, overtightened screws and poor clamp design.

c6 drafted · lead Transport damage

c7 drafted · lead Mechanical stress

Excessive stress during installation or extreme stress on the module frame.

c8 drafted · lead Hail impact

c9 drafted · lead Object impact

Stones, other objects, and pebbles thrown up during grass cutting.

c10 drafted · lead Vandalism

c11 drafted · lead Animal activity

For example, goats climbing on modules or birds dropping objects.

c12 drafted · lead Heavy snowfall

c13 drafted · lead High winds

c14 drafted · lead Sand abrasion

Sandstorms can abrade and weaken the front glass in arid climates.

review note: support check: partial - Sandstorm abrasion weakening the glass is stated, but the passage ties arid climates generally, which is fine; however it says weakening rather than directly causing breakage.

c15 drafted · lead High operating temperature

Burn marks and hotspots create temperature gradients in the glass, and non-tempered glass is most at risk.

c16 drafted · lead Cell Interconnection Failure

Hotspots and burn marks from interconnection defects cause local thermal stress.

c17 drafted · lead Junction Box Failure

Resistive heating in a failing junction box adds to the risk.

c18 verified · fact Mounting structure defect

presents_as

c19 verified · fact Cracked front glass

Tempered or heat-treated float glass shatters into small pieces, while annealed glass breaks into large pieces.

verified by: joshuahamsaverified on: 2026-10-16

c20 drafted · lead Hotspot in IR image

review note: support check: partial - Glass breakage causes hot spots and IR detects temperature anomalies, but an IR image hotspot symptom is not explicitly stated.

c21 drafted · lead Ground fault alarm or trip

May be intermittent, with lower insulation or short circuits on rainy days.

c22 drafted · lead Reduced string current

A module whose glass is broken over its full area lowers current and power for the whole string.

c23 drafted · lead Gradual performance decline

Caused by cell and circuit corrosion as water vapour and oxygen get in.

c24 drafted · lead Loss of electrical insulation

Most pronounced in wet conditions. It can stop the whole plant.

c26 drafted · lead Module Hotspot from Cell Damage

Could eventually lead to fire.
