Also known as
PV cable, DC input cable

The DC cable runs from the PV strings to the inverter's positive and negative DC input terminals. Inverter manuals call for PV cable that meets a 1,500V standard. The required size depends on the inverter, for example 4 to 6 mm2, 12 to 10 AWG or 8 to 2 AWG. The main failure mode is Cable Defect. Damaged or undersized cables can overheat and cause insulation faults, ground faults, lost production and a fire risk. Related failure modes in this component group are insulation failure and DC connector mismatch. Reported field damage includes corroded cables and animal bites. Find defects by visual inspection and infrared thermography. Insulation-resistance testing, comparing string currents and fault localization on isolated circuits also help. When making a connection, strip the cable, crimp the contact and use a matching PV connector. Then tighten the cable gland and check polarity with a multimeter.
