PV connector, DC terminal

A DC connector is a plug-and-socket part that joins DC cables, for example where PV strings enter an inverter. Inverter manuals show it as a labelled position on the device. To assemble one, strip the cable, crimp the positive or negative contact, push it into the insulator until it snaps in, tighten the cable gland, and then check the polarity. Use the connector model the manufacturer recommends. One inverter maker does not cover damage caused by unmatched terminals under warranty. One SMA inverter manual allows a maximum input current of 20 A per DC connector. The main failure mode is Connector Defect. It can cause resistive heating, open circuits, ground faults, arcing and fire, and it can leave burned connectors. Defects are usually found by visual inspection and infrared thermography. Tactile inspection, string current comparison and insulation resistance testing can also help. How a connector's contact resistance changes over time can be assessed using the IEC 61238-1-1 standard.
