Regular system inspections are a preventive action, listed as optional, for module, mounting and cabling failures such as backsheet cracking, backsheet chalking, cable insulation failure, bad module clamping and defective mounting structures. Where modules or cables that pose a direct safety risk are replaced, regular inspections are used to track the condition of the parts left in service. For backsheet chalking, inspections follow how the observed degradation progresses, because chalking can come before more serious backsheet cracking. For bad clamping and defective mounting structures, inspections go together with accredited laboratory testing of non-standard mounting setups such as facade mounting. For inverter overheating and incorrect inverter installation, inspections focus on the ventilation units, together with following the installation procedure and using adequate cooling. These failures are mainly found by visual inspection; for inverter installation faults, monitoring is also used. Inspections only find and track problems and do not fix them, so the sources pair them with continuous ground fault detection and, in newer guidance, an arc detection tool.
