SPD replacement
SPD replacement means swapping out a surge protection device that has lost its protective function, which is the surge protector exhausted failure mode. First look at the SPD indicator. If it shows red, replace the SPD module. If it shows green, take the module out and reseat it in its socket. If the warning does not clear, contact post-sales service. On Eaton SPDs, a replacement is called for when the red LEDs are lit and the audible alarm sounds, whether on the phase channels or the neutral-ground channel. This means protection is compromised or lost, often after a significant surge event. If the SPD's rated voltage is below the system voltage, replace it with a model rated for the correct voltage. If the cause is an extended temporary overvoltage, find and correct the overvoltage source before fitting the new SPD, or the new unit can fail the same way. Many SPD failures come from improper installation, so confirm the unit is installed correctly before concluding it has failed. Eaton states that only the factory can repair or replace units covered by its warranty. The warranty runs 10 years from delivery, or 15 years if the product is registered.
<!-- review notes
- sentence 1: support check: partial - Passages show replacing SPD when protection is lost/compromised (red indicators), but none names an 'exhausted' failure mode or defines SPD replacement as such; also Warn0040 replacement is conditional on red indicator.
- sentence 3: support check: partial - Red LEDs with audible alarm calling for replacement on phase and neutral-ground channels is stated, and 'compromised or lost' appears, but 'often after a significant surge event' is only given for neutral-ground, not phases, and 'on Eaton' is implied.
- sentence 4: support check: partial - Replacing with correct voltage model and checking/correcting TOV sources then replacing are stated, but the claim that a new unit can fail the same way is not stated. -->
