A battery energy storage system is a storage system that uses batteries as its medium for storing power. In PV systems it holds surplus PV energy so that it can be used later, for example in the evening or during bad weather, which raises self-consumption. Battery types include lead acid, several lithium-ion chemistries such as lithium iron phosphate and NMC, and nickel cadmium. The right O&M practice depends on the battery type and the use case. The battery management system controls how a lithium-ion battery operates. It needs a data cable between the battery and the battery inverter or hybrid inverter. Some inverters may only be run with lithium-ion batteries that the inverter manufacturer has approved. In the field, batteries often last about half as long as the manufacturer's literature says. The likely causes are overheating and long periods at a low state of charge. After installation, state-of-health testing tracks how capacity declines over time. It also finds problems that need corrective maintenance or replacement of cells or whole systems. Non-invasive checks such as impedance and voltage testing can monitor battery performance continuously or frequently. Keep records so that changes in parameters such as internal resistance can be seen over time.
