Rooftop PV
A rooftop PV system mounts PV modules on a building roof. The modules are wired in series into strings, the strings are joined in a combiner box to form an array, and an inverter converts the DC to AC, which is fed to the grid or used on site. Typical sites are the roofs of warehouses and similar buildings that have little rooftop equipment to shade the panels. Aisles are often left within or between arrays so staff can reach rooftop equipment for maintenance and firefighting, and so other equipment or higher roofs do not shade the panels. Commercial rooftop systems commonly use three-phase grid-tied string inverters, such as the Huawei SUN2000 and Solectria PVI series, together with AC distribution units and sometimes an isolation transformer. The Solectria grid-following inverters are not intended for microgrid or off-grid use, and the manufacturer does not support AC-coupled storage integration. The FM Global data sheet on roof-mounted PV covers wind, arrays fastened to standing seam roofs, exterior fire spread and flexible PV installations.
<!-- review notes
- sentence 1: support check: partial - Series strings, combiner box, array, inverter DC-to-AC, and grid/on-site use are stated, but the passage does not say modules are mounted on a building roof as the system definition (only that roofs are common sites).
- sentence 4: support check: partial - Huawei SUN2000 for commercial rooftops with ACDUs and isolation transformer, and Solectria three-phase grid-tied inverters, are stated, but 'commonly use' and 'sometimes' isolation transformer are generalizations not stated, and the transformer is listed as typical, not optional.
- sentence 5: support check: partial - Not intended for microgrid/off-grid is stated, but the manufacturer only says it does not support or provide guidance for AC-coupled integration, while noting successful integration is possible; 'not support' is roughly stated, though only for the listed models, not all Solectria inverters.
- sentence 4: review: partial - The passages name Huawei SUN2000 for commercial rooftops with ACDUs and an isolation transformer, and Solectria PVI as three-phase grid-tied inverters for rooftop use, but 'commonly use' is not stated and Huawei lists the transformer as typical, not 'sometimes'. -->
