System designer
On utility-scale battery projects, the site designer is the person responsible for all technical decisions on the project. This work covers civil, mechanical and electrical design, and the designer checks the site geotechnical report for geotechnical design requirements. The designer coordinates controls and operation modes as needed and consults the SCADA engineer on them. The designer prepares project-specific documents and drawings, such as the site layout, single-line diagram and network architecture, and coordinates and obtains the required permits. The Sandia inverter test protocol was written on the assumption that its results would mainly be used by a knowledgeable system designer. Designers often use design software such as SolarEdge Designer. The tool runs the design calculations, recommends inverters and power optimizers for the site size, and can export the array layout to the monitoring platform.
<!-- review notes
- sentence 1: support check: partial - Passages say the site designer is responsible for all technical decisions for the project, but do not mention utility-scale battery projects.
- sentence 6: support check: partial - The passages support that Designer does the calculations, recommends inverter and optimizer selection per site size, and exports the layout to monitoring. They do not say designers often use design software such as SolarEdge Designer, and the 'runs calculations' claim is only loosely implied.
- sentence 1: review: partial - The passages say the site designer is responsible for all technical decisions on the project, but they never limit this to utility-scale battery projects. -->
