NFPA
NFPA, the National Fire Protection Association, is a standards body that publishes fire and electrical safety codes. Installation manuals point to these codes as a guide when no local law covers the work. Its publications include NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code (NEC), and NFPA 855, the standard for installing stationary energy storage systems. It also publishes NFPA 70E for electrical safety in the workplace, the NFPA 1 Fire Code, NFPA 10 for portable fire extinguishers, NFPA 220 on building construction types, and the NFPA 5000 Building Code. Inverter manuals cite NFPA 70E for the PPE needed to work on equipment, such as arc-rated insulating gloves, arc-flash clothing and arc hoods. Battery storage manuals include an NFPA placard figure and a section on NFPA compliance. Storage procedures also cite NFPA 70 and NFPA 70E. Codes are only used where the jurisdiction recognizes NFPA. Always ask the authority having jurisdiction which local codes and editions apply.
<!-- review notes
- sentence 6: support check: partial - The passage says to check with the AHJ for applicable local codes. It also says the listed publications apply to localities that recognize NFPA and ICC. It does not say codes are 'only' used there, and it does not mention editions beyond using the most current version. -->
