Correct crimping means redoing faulty crimps and installation errors on connectors and cable terminals. It is one of the listed fixes for connector defects. Bad crimping is named as one way connectors end up installed against the instructions, and this kind of bad installation is a major cause of damaged DC connectors. Untreated connector defects can cause resistance heating, open circuits, ground faults, arcing and fire hazards. To prevent bad crimps, use adequate crimping tools, have trained staff do the installation, and keep connectors and cables protected from humidity during installation. Equipment manuals list dedicated tools, such as MC4 terminal crimping tools or pliers for PV connectors and crimping pliers for assembling cable ends. For ring-type cable terminals, one manual says to strip slightly more insulation than the crimp area, insert the wire and crimp it with a hydraulic tool. Correct crimping alone does not fix a mismatch. Damaged or mismatched connectors should also be replaced, and connector types should be checked for compatibility across repaired circuits.
